What should a construction change order include?

A change order should name the job and customer, describe the change in scope, break down its added or removed cost, state the revised contract total, note any change to the completion date, and carry signature lines for both the contractor and the customer.

Do change orders need to be signed?

A change order isn't enforceable until both parties agree to it in writing — a signature (wet-ink or electronic) is what turns a conversation about scope into something you can bill and defend if it's ever disputed.

Can I bill for a change order before it's signed?

It's risky. Without a signed change order, a customer can dispute the added cost after the work is done, since there's no written record they agreed to the price beforehand.
